Dùthchas—pronounced DOO-khuss—is a Scottish Gaelic word with no exact English translation. It speaks to a profound sense of belonging to place: the relationship between land, memory, ancestry, and the people who carry them forward.
Each Dùthchas is individually commissioned and created to order, bringing together natural elements gathered from the Appalachian landscape and arranged by hand within glass.
Gathered
Gathered brings together elements found across the Appalachian landscape—moss, bark, lichen, pine needles, stones, and other naturally encountered materials. Each element is intuitively composed by hand within glass, creating a small sculptural landscape that holds a sense of the place from which it came. Occasional elements such as a seed, shell, clay, or soil may become part of the composition when naturally encountered and suited to the piece.
Grounding
Grounding is created in layers, drawing from the earth and waters of Appalachia. Creek stones, sand, red clay, darker soil, and other naturally gathered materials are intuitively arranged within glass, allowing the layers, textures, and colors of the land itself to become the composition.
Whichever expression is chosen, each Dùthchas develops its own composition, movement, and character. No two will ever be alike. The photographs shown represent previous works and are examples only.
Natural Materials
Every Dùthchas is created with natural, organic materials that are carefully dried while otherwise remaining untreated. Their variations in color, texture, shape, and form are intrinsic to the work.
Over time, these natural elements may subtly settle, shift, soften in color, or change in texture. Rather than imperfections, these changes are part of the evolving character of the piece and its continuing relationship with the natural world from which it came.
Care
Dùthchas is a sculptural work of art and should be displayed with the same consideration given to other works created from natural materials.
Keep the vessel corked, upright, and indoors in a dry, stable environment. Protect it from direct sunlight, excessive heat, high humidity, and sudden changes in temperature. Avoid bathrooms, damp areas, and sunny windowsills.
Do not shake the vessel. Clean only the exterior with a soft, dry cloth and avoid moisture around the cork. Handle gently and keep out of reach of small children and pets.
Each glass vessel measures approximately 3½ inches tall. Because every Dùthchas is individually created from natural materials, its composition and appearance will vary.
