Dùthchas

Where Intuition Finds Expression

Appalachia Held in Glass

The Story Behind Dùthchas

Dùthchas—pronounced DOO-khuss—is a Scottish Gaelic word with no exact English translation. It speaks of belonging to a place—of land, ancestry, memory, and the deep relationship between them.

The name grows from my own Scottish roots and from an ancient connection written into the land itself. Long before there was an Atlantic Ocean between them, the lands that would become Scotland and Appalachia were joined in a much older world.

Each Dùthchas begins with a pinch of red Appalachian clay from beside Middle Island Creek, rich earth gathered where the woods grow deep, and a sprinkling of West Virginia salt drawn from the ancient Iapetus Sea beneath the Appalachian Mountains—a sea that predates the Atlantic.

A few small creek pebbles anchor it to the water.

From there, each one takes its own shape, holding small traces of the landscape gathered along my walks through the woods, fields, and creek banks of the place I call home.

What finds its way into each one is chosen intuitively, guided by the land, the season, and whatever draws my eye.

Once a Dùthchas has found its person, it is accompanied by an intuitive message, received and written specifically for the one who chose it.

Together, it becomes a small gathering of Appalachia—earth, water, memory, and place held in glass.
