The Story
Some waters disappear, but they leave something behind.
A shell from the Atlantic shore at Cherry Grove Beach rests upon a stone gathered from a small stream that feeds Middle Island Creek in West Virginia. Around them are crystals of J.Q. Dickinson salt, drawn from an ancient sea held deep beneath the Appalachian earth.
As the shell was placed upon the stone, sand still held inside it spilled out and mingled with the salt. It wasn’t planned.
For just a moment, sand carried from the Atlantic met salt from an ancient sea beneath Appalachia, upon a stone shaped by the waters running through these mountains today.
Waters separated by millions of years and hundreds of miles met again in one quiet place.
