Created from naturally weathered and creek-worn stones gathered from Middle Island Creek, Bỳ-en-sòs — Middle Island Creek Composition IV is a one-of-a-kind, four-piece sculptural work shaped first by land and water and brought into composition by Becky Nichols.
A broad, low stone forms the foundation of the composition. Above it, two naturally weathered stones rise in balance, their curved and irregular forms fitting into relationship with one another. Nestled within the uppermost stone is a small, warm-toned creek stone, creating a distinct point of color and scale within the larger composition. Natural pits, mineral variations, weathered surfaces, and softened edges remain visible throughout the work.
A Hidden Hag Stone
The upper stone is a naturally formed hag stone, with an opening worn completely through it by nature. In the assembled composition, the opening remains hidden from view and is revealed only when the stone is lifted and turned.
Hag stones have a long place in British and European folklore, where naturally pierced stones have been associated with protection, good fortune, and the belief that looking through the opening could reveal what ordinarily remains unseen. Here, the hag stone remains exactly as it was found—its hidden opening becoming another layer of discovery held within the work.
Each element remains as the earth and water shaped it. Becky intuitively brings the individual stones into relationship with one another, allowing form, balance, texture, and negative space to guide the composition.
The completed work receives a symbolic sprinkling of West Virginia salt drawn from the ancient Iapetus Sea beneath the Appalachian Mountains, connecting the sculpture to a much older geological story held within the region.

Natural Materials
Bỳ-en-sòs is created from natural stone whose irregular surfaces, mineral variations, fissures, weathered edges, and subtle differences in coloration are intrinsic to the work.
The stones may naturally release small amounts of sand or mineral particles over time. These characteristics are not flaws; they are evidence of the material’s natural formation and weathering and are part of the individual character of the sculpture.
Care & Display
Bỳ-en-sòs is a sculptural work of art and should be handled and displayed accordingly.
Display the sculpture indoors on a sturdy, level surface in a dry, stable environment. Protect it from excessive humidity, direct heat, and locations where it may be bumped or knocked over.
Because the composition consists of four separate elements, handle each stone individually and support it securely from beneath. Do not lift or move the sculpture as a single assembled unit.
Do not clean with water, sprays, or household cleaning products. If necessary, gently remove surface dust with a clean, soft, dry brush.
Keep out of reach of small children and pets.
