A shell from the Atlantic shore at Cherry Grove Beach rests upon a stone gathered from a small stream that feeds Middle Island Creek in West Virginia. Around them are crystals of J.Q. Dickinson salt, drawn from an ancient sea held deep beneath the Appalachian earth.
As the shell was placed upon the stone, sand still held inside it spilled out and mingled with the salt—a small, unplanned meeting of two waters, separated by place and time.
